NEKLS Tech Day 2008

June 30, 2008

Mark your calendar for Friday, August 1 to attend the 2008 Tech Day workshop at the Topeka & Shawnee County Public Library from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. (8:30 a.m. registration).

We will explore the current and potential impact of hand-held/mobile devices on library users and services during the keynote with Michael Porter, Interactive Strategy Manager at Web Junction, known to his blog readers as Libraryman (www.libraryman.com).

We are encouraged to bring our favorite gadget. So, do you have an iPhone, PDA, mobile phone, GPS, Chumby, iPod or other hand-held bit of technology that you can’t seem to live without? What impact has it had on your life? What do you think the potential is for libraries and their users? We will discuss this with a panel after the keynote and then hear about exciting new developments at the State Library.

Other topics up for discussion in break out sessions include gaming, Macs in the library, IM reference, and MaintainIT with speakers such as Thatcher Rea, Patti Butcher, David Lee King, Eric Gustafson, Royce Kitts, Erin Downey Howerton, Brenda Hough, and Joshua M. Neff, to name just a few.

Cost: $20 for NEKLS members and $40 for non-members
Audience: public, school and academic librarians; trustees, friends and library fans
Registration: Event Registration Online!

Registration flyer for Statewide Training for Trustee Certification

June 30, 2008

TO: Kansas librarians and trustees
FROM: Shannon Roy, Continuing Education Coordinator, State Library of Kansas
RE: Registration flyer for Statewide Training for Trustee Certification

The flyer and registration for the second statewide training for trustee certification is attached to this post. I would encourage public library directors to make their trustees aware of this opportunity to complete the requirements for trustee certification.

Confirmation of registration and directions to all locations will be sent to all participating libraries and directly to trustees who include their email addresses. Librarians are welcome to send place holders for their trustees if they indicate when the workshop fee(s) will be coming and whether the check will be written by the library or the trustee.

A note of hello, altered art, and cupcakes.

June 28, 2008

The cupcake was just to lure you in.

Now don’t say I never gave you anything.

That Note of Hello:

I’m the newest contributer to the KLA blog, so I figured I’d give you a cupcake and say hello.

My street cred: I received my MLIS about a year ago from the University of Pittsburgh (in yes, Pittsburgh, PA) and I’ve been working at Bradford Memorial Library in sunny El Dorado since November as the Public Services Librarian (I do just about anything, including party tricks!).

I may be in a unique position. I’m technically a Millennial, being a child of the 80’s (born 11/79) , and I serve Millennials. Hopefully I can help bridge the gap between my sometimes incomprehensible generation and librarianship.

Altered Art:

This is a promise more than an actual post about Altered Art. I’ve gotten a few phone calls from around the state from folks looking for information on how I made the hat that was auctioned at the KLA conference a few months back (was it already so long ago?). I’m going to be working on a post over at my blog (tammygarrison.wordpress.com) explaining what I did, and I will post the link here.

That being said…I’ve had a lot of success with the altered art programs I’ve run for teens and adults. The concept of recycling unwanted books and materials and turning them into art appeals to a wide variety of interests, and I can usually find a base material that someone is interested in altering.

We’ve made purses out of books, mosaics out of tins and felt, and collage-decorated incense holders out of Pringles cans. It’s been a blast, and I’ve gotten rid of a lot of old encyclopedias and Readers Digests that way.

Thanks to Royce for letting me post my insane ramblings here, and I hope we can start up some conversations about serving teens, the art and alchemy of librarianship and maybe even discuss programming!

Keep it Simple Green

June 26, 2008

We all have to start somewhere. We discovered that our former Reference recycling bin was a major annoyance for our custodian and it also looked junky. In the past we just dumped everything in a crate and he had to sort it out. In order for recycling to work, the custodian has to be kept happy. Now it’s all sorted and his life is easier.

Many aspects of greening our libraries are so simple and yet they don’t get done or they just seem like too much trouble. Sometimes if we just take a step back and figure out what isn’t working we can find a simple solution that will help make it easier for everyone.

The box arrives.

The box is unpacked.

State Data Center News from Peter Haxton!

June 25, 2008

Peter Haxton sent this out on KanLib-L today. Good stuff from the people at the State Library.

***

Hello-

I just wanted to point out that I have created a business and economic data page (http://www.kslib.info/sdc/business.html )on the State Data Center website with information about businesses in Kansas and current labor statistics. I have also been keeping the fact of the month on the home page updated.

The latest Census population estimates for cities are to be released late this month or early in July. Those fresh numbers will be posted when they are available.

If you have any questions about what the State Data Center does, how to use Census statistics or tools, or if you have any comments about the website, please let me know.

Thanks for your time,

What is happening on the KANLIB-L? Is there a future for print newspapers?

June 24, 2008

If you have been paying attention to the Kansas Library List this morning you will notice that Helen, Roger, and some others have some problems with some pretty big newspapers. Mainly it appears that the KC Star and the Wichita Eagle are not making print copies of newspapers readily available to some areas on Kansas.

Is this the demise of print journalism that everyone has been talking about for the past decade? or, is this possibly the effect of gas prices on courier delivery?

I am curious if anyone has a viable solution to this problem? My fear is that these newspapers will consider the needs of our patrons inconsequential when placed alongside the dollar signs that would potentially be saved.

Do we have to start printing off the newspaper everyday for those patrons who want something physical to hold? Is it time they came out with a 22″X34″ Kindle Reader for Newspapers?

I was listening to the podcast “Cranky Geeks” with John Dvorak, and he has some great comments on the power of the print newspaper. Mainly that a paper newspaper is something that is Scrabble in a relatively short amount of time, versus scrolling through endless text and taking link to link to get the days news. He also has a nice discussion about the future of blogging v. journalism.

So what are your thoughts on this?
